What’s wrong with commercial mouthwashes?

When you pick up a bottle of store-bought mouthwash, you will find some pretty harmful chemicals.

Flouride being a huge one, touted for preventing tooth decay, is actually a neurotoxin and can cause a ton of health issues you may not even think are linked to your oral hygiene regimen.

Alcohol and hydrogen peroxide are also common villains in oral care products. These both kill off beneficial bacterial in your oral microbiome.

Don’t forget all those coloring agents; why does it need to be bright blue or green? Those artificial colors are linked to all sorts of side effects and cancer risks, containing chemicals like proplyparaben- which poses a risk for developmental and reproductive toxicity. The list goes on.

How to Make Homemade Herbal Mouthwash:

  1. In a small saucepan, combine the herbs of your choice and water over medium-low heat. Cover and bring to a simmer.
  2. Remove the herbal concoction from the heat and let it sit, covered for 10 minutes to infuse.
  3. Strain the herbs, using a fine mesh strainer placed over a bowl, from the water leaving behind an herbal tea.
  4. To the bowl of tea, add the salt, baking soda, aloe vera juice, and xylitol (if using), and stir to combine.
  5. Transfer the mixture to a bottle and store it for up to a week or in the refrigerator for longer.
